Die University of Westminster wurde 1838 unter dem Namen „The Polytechnic Institution“ als Londons erste Fachhochschule gegründet und hat sich über die Jahre nicht nur den starken Praxisbezug und das Streben nach Gleichberechtigung erhalten, sondern auch den Ehrgeiz, in technischen Bereichen immer ganz vorne mit dabei zu sein. 

Bei dieser Ausrichtung ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass die University of Westminster in den Fachrichtungen Kommunikation, IT, Technik und Medienproduktion ein breites Angebot und eine herausragende Lehre aufweist. Hierbei spielen auch die hochmodernen Einrichtungen eine große Rolle.

 

Außerdem bringt die starke Orientierung in Richtung praktischer Anwendungen auch eine Menge Möglichkeiten für Praktika, Projekten, sowie Kooperationen mit Unternehmen mit sich und daher eignet sich die University of Westminster besonders für Studierende, die erste Berufserfahrungen sammeln und bereits im Studium Kontakte mit potenziellen Arbeitgebern knüpfen möchten.

 

 

Studienjahr:

Das Studienjahr an der University of Westminster ist in zwei Semester unterteilt, die zusätzlich von der Summer Period unterbrochen werden.

  • Summer period 2025: 14. Juni 2025 – 26. Juli 2025
  • Semester One 2025: 08. September 2025 – 08. Dezember 2025

 

Der Hauptcampus der University of Westminster liegt im Londoner Stadtteil Marylebone, mitten im Herzen der britischen Metropole. Diese zentrale Lage bietet dir direkten Zugang zu vielen kulturellen und historischen Sehenswürdigkeiten. In unmittelbarer Nähe befinden sich berühmte Wahrzeichen wie der Regent’s Park, das geschäftige Einkaufsviertel Oxford Street und der weltbekannte Buckingham Palace. Die perfekte Lage, wenn das pulsierende Stadtleben Londons in vollen Zügen genießen möchtest!

 

Der Campus selbst verbindet historische Architektur mit modernen Lernräumen und hochmoderner Ausstattung. Hier werden vor allem wirtschafts-, sozial- und rechtswissenschaftliche Studiengänge angeboten. Die Bibliotheken, Computerlabore und Gruppenarbeitsräume sind darauf ausgelegt, eine produktive Arbeitsatmosphäre zu schaffen, während gemütliche Cafés und Aufenthaltsbereiche für Entspannung und soziale Interaktion sorgen.

 

Im Gegensatz dazu liegt der Harrow Campus etwas weiter außerhalb im Nordwesten Londons und bietet eine ruhigere, grüne Umgebung. Dieser Campus ist das kreative Zentrum der University of Westminster und vor allem die künstlerischen Fachbereiche von Musik über Kunst und Mode bis hin zur Medienproduktion, wo dir jede Menge Platz gegeben wird, um dich in modernen Einrichtungen kreativ auszutoben.

 

Die University of Westminster bietet Unterkünfte in Studentenwohnheimen an und kann dir außerdem bei der Suche nach einer Privatunterkunft oder einer Gastfamilie behilflich sein.

London hat 7,5 Millionen Einwohner und ist die Hauptstadt des Vereinigten Königreiches von Großbritannien und Nordirland. Die Stadt erstreckt sich 45 Kilometer an der Themse entlang in Südostengland auf der Insel Großbritannien. Weil sie sich in der gemäßigten Klimazone befindet, sind die Sommer bis auf ein paar Ausnahmen nie zu heiß und die Winter nie zu kalt, denn die Temperatur sinkt nur selten unter den Gefrierpunkt.

 

Es gibt in London unendlich viel zu sehen, beispielsweise das British Museum in Bloomsbury mit seinen über sechs Millionen Ausstellungsstücken oder die National Gallery am Trafalgar Square. Weitere bekannte Museen und Ausstellungen sind unter anderem Madame Tussaud’s Waxworks oder das National History Museum. Man kann auch die Wohnsitze der Königsfamilie besuchen wie den St. James‘ Palace, wo der Prince of Wales lebt, oder den Buckingham Palace mit dem weltbekannten Ritual der Wachablösung, die Residenz der Königin in London.

 

Interessante Bauwerke sind die Saint Paul’s Cathedral, der Tower von London oder die London Bridge. Sie befindet sich an Stelle der einzigen Brücke, die bis Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts die Themse in der Stadt überquerte. Der bekannteste Turm ist der 98 Meter hohe Glockenturm mit dem Big Ben, ein Teil des Palace of Westminster, dem Sitz des englischen Parlaments. Der Hyde Park ist einer der beliebtesten Parks in der Stadt mit der Marble Arch und der Speakers‘ Corner. Er wurde früher als die Lunge Londons bezeichnet. Zum Nachtleben und den Shoppingmöglichkeiten in der Metropole muss eigentlich nichts gesagt werden, es gibt unzählige Möglichkeiten für wirklich jeden Geschmack.

Nach deinem Abitur kannst du an der University of Westminster ein Academic Gap Year absolvieren und ein oder zwei Semester lang in London studieren. Du kannst dabei einführende Kurse aus den verschiedensten Studiengängen belegen und so in mehrere Fächer hineinschnuppern.

 

 

Voraussetzungen & Bewerbungsprozess

Für ein Academic Gap Year an der University of Westminster benötigst du das (Fach-) Abitur. Außerdem werden ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse verlangt. Diese müssen mit einem Sprachnachweis belegt werden, der bereits mit der Bewerbung einzureichen ist. Akzeptiert werden TOEFL, IELTS und der DAAD Sprachtest. Die genannten Sprachanforderungen können für einzelne Kurse abweichen.

Das „Study Abroad“-Programm bietet dir für einen Zeitraum von ein oder zwei Semestern eine semester- und fachbereichsübergreifende Kursauswahl aus allen Universitätskursen der an der University of Westminster angebotenen Bachelor- und Masterstudiengänge.

 

 

 

Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten

Zur Finanzierung des Auslandssemesters an der University of Westminster kann unter anderem Auslands-BAföG beantragt werden. Dieses beinhaltet neben Unterstützung bei den Lebenshaltungs– und Reisekosten sowie der Krankenversicherung auch einen Zuschuss zu den Studiengebühren in Höhe von bis zu EUR 5.600, sofern ein individueller Anspruch auf Förderung besteht.
